This oil sketch showing St. Peter's Basilica in the distance was painted during the artist's stay in Rome, 1777–85. Its spontaneity and freshness is typical of the artist's outdoor paintings, in which he sought to capture the light and atmosphere of Rome.

In 1784 de schilder Pierre Henri de Valenciennes made the 18th century artpiece Uitzicht op Rome. Het kunstwerk is geschilderd met het formaat van ingelijst: 30 x 49 x 4,5 cm (11 13/16 x 19 5/16 x 1 3/4 inch); Zonder lijst: 19,5 x 39 cm (7 11/16 x 15 3/8 inch) en werd beschilderd met de techniek oil on paper, mounted on board.
