The sitter is Jean Marc Nattier, a fashionable portrait painter whose work is displayed nearby. In the 1720s Tocqué studied with Nattier and in 1747 he married Nattier's daughter. Tocqué's broadly brushed unfinished sketch may date to about 1740.
