Een Nederlandse stad vormt de achtergrond van dit verhaal dat laat zien hoe een goede christen mensen in nood moet helpen. Op bijna elk paneel staat Christus tussen de toeschouwers. De taferelen geven een indruk van de stedelijke samenleving rond 1500. Het werk werd zwaar beschadigd tijdens de Beeldenstorm van 1566, toen rooms-katholieke kerken werden vernield door protestanten.
