Op 18 april 1893 vertrouwt de staat Cormon de realisatie toe van een decoratief ensemble van tien panelen aan de muur en een plafond voor het amfitheater van de paleontologie en het Museum voor Antropologie van Natuurlijke Historie in Parijs. Dankzij langdurige documentatie en het maken van voorlopige schetsen werd het decor van het auditorium in 1898 ingehuldigd en is het nog steeds aanwezig. Het presenteert een reeks scènes die nabootsen wat je je kunt voorstellen uit de begindagen van de mensheid met het oog op nieuwe wetenschappelijke kennis.
