In 1613 gaf het Nederlandse parlement (Staten Generaal) Otto van Veen de opdracht twaalf schilderijen te schilderen die de opstand van de Bataven tegen de Romeinen in 69 en 70 n.Chr. uitbeelden. Deze werden tentoongesteld op het Binnenhof, het centrale regeringsgebouw in Den Haag. In de beginjaren van de Republiek vergeleken velen hun eigen opstand tegen Spanje met de Bataafse opstand.

Deze klassieke kunst kunstwerk is geschilderd door Otto van Veen in 1600. The painter Otto van Veen was a European artist from the Netherlands, whose style can primarily be attributed to Mannerism. The European painter lived for 73 jaar, geboren in 1556 in Leiden and deceased in the year 1629 in Brussels metropolitan area.
