In de loop van zijn 70-jarige carrière schilderde Thomas Sully meer dan tweeduizend portretten, waaronder Dr. Joseph Klapp en mevrouw Klapp (Anna Milnor). Joseph Klapp is geboren en getogen in Albany, New York, maar studeerde geneeskunde aan de Universiteit van Pennsylvania en vestigde zich in Philadelphia. Op het portret rust Klapp zijn elleboog op een medische tekst, die zijn beroep aangeeft. De boeken langs de achtergrond van het schilderij spreken ook over de intellectuele bekwaamheid van de oppas. Het beeld van mevrouw Klapp, geschilderd in een harmonieus beperkt kleurenschema, benadrukt haar schoonheid. Samen vormen de portretten een beeld van een verfijnd stel dat hun welvaart, intelligentie en smaak viert.
