William Sidney Mount, 1840 - cider maken - fine art print

Hoewel deze scène op overtuigende wijze een moment uit het landelijke leven vastlegt, lag de inspiratie ervan in het politieke manoeuvreren rond de zwaarbevochten presidentsverkiezingen van 1840. Het beeld van de eenvoud van het huis dat door de cidermakers wordt belichaamd, werd opgeroepen door de Whig-kandidaat, William Henry Harrison , gepromoot als een gewone man die de voorkeur gaf aan een blokhut en harde cider boven de vermeende excessen van het Democratische Witte Huis van Martin Van Buren. Het werk is gemaakt in opdracht van de prominente New Yorkse zakenman en Whig-leider Charles Augustus Davis. Davis was de bedenker van het volkse "Jack Downing" -personage, wiens overpeinzingen de aantrekkingskracht van Whig verruimden door aanvallen op het rampzalige financiële beleid van Jackson dat verantwoordelijk was voor de paniek van 1837. Mount, een conservatieve democraat die zich tegen de populistische Jackson verzette, zette zijn schilderij af met details, zoals het opvallend gedateerde cidervat, mogelijk bedoeld om te verwijzen naar de grotere politieke context. In 1841 verweefde een Whig-journalist de verwijzingen tot een anekdote in de 'New York American', vol politieke insinuaties en dubbele betekenissen. Waarschijnlijk met een grotere specificiteit dan de kunstenaar bedoelde, vergeleek hij elke figuur met een personage of belangengroep bij de verkiezingen. Het is waarschijnlijk dat Mount's motieven zowel subtiele politieke zorgen omvatten als een toewijding aan de transcriptie van visuele gegevens die rechtstreeks uit zijn landelijke omgeving waren gehaald. De cidermolen die hier werd vereeuwigd, stond tot het begin van de twintigste eeuw in Setauket, Long Island.

Deze 19th eeuw painting "Cider Making" was painted by the mannetje Amerikaans kunstenaar William Sydney Mount in 1840. Het over 180 jaar oude originele creatie had de volgende grootte: 27 x 34 1/8 inch (68,6 x 86,7 cm). Olieverf op canvas was applied by the North American artist as the technique for the artpiece. It is in the the digital art collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
