Latude watch hand Bastille whose demolition has begun; it relies on the scale that was used in his escape from the fortress. Other instruments and a lettre de cachet are shown next to the scale.
The 1789 Exhibition catalog includes the following statement: "Jean-Henri Masers, Knight of the Tude, Engineer, retained for 35 years in the prisons of State, which he escaped several times, and among others Bastille, with two scales, one for wood, and the other rope, both made by him and his companion, without the aid of someone in their industry, where they used their firewood & their they spun linen. " Latude had spent 35 years in prison because, in the hope of attracting the protection of the Marquise de Pompadour, he had had the naivete to warn him of a conspiracy he himself had hatched; his deception was quickly discovered, and the favorite did incarcerated in the Bastille on March 1, 1749. After several years of preparation, and Latude Alege, his companion managed to escape 25 February 1766. Arrested in Amsterdam, was Latude brought and imprisoned at Vincennes. He still managed to escape twice but each time was found. Its final release was not held until 1784. Vestier had only a few weeks between the Bastille and the opening of the Show (25 August) to achieve this portrait; so he was presented only during the last days of exposure; he was again exposed to the Salon of 1791 (No. 109).
