Kerk bezocht Griekenland in 1869 en bracht enkele weken door in Athene. Daar schilderde hij talrijke studies en olieverfschetsen van de ruïnes van het Parthenon die later als basis voor dit werk dienden. Hoewel hij van plan was een groot doek van het Parthenon te schilderen terwijl hij nog in Griekenland was, duurde het tot 1871 voordat een opdracht van de financier en filantroop Morris K. Jesup de Kerk toestond met dit grote doek te beginnen. In februari van dat jaar was hij al aan het werk aan "een groot Parthenon". In mei was hij klaar met het schilderij en schreef hij over zijn bezorgdheid over de juiste verlichting in Jesups huis. De foto werd voor het eerst tentoongesteld in New York in Goupil's Gallery in 1872, waar hij zeer geprezen werd. Het verscheen vervolgens in vele grote tentoonstellingen, waaronder de Paris Exposition Universelle van 1878.

The artist was born in 1826 in Hartford, Hartford county, Connecticut, United States and deceased at the age of 74 in the year 1900 in New York City, New York state, United States.
