Dit zelfportret, dat La Farge in oktober 1859 schilderde op het landgoed van zijn familie in Glen Cove, Long Island, weerspiegelt zijn gebruik van een foto als beeldbron; zijn waardering voor de ongemoduleerde vormen en afgeplatte ruimte van Japanse prenten; zijn afhankelijkheid van brede tonale massa op de manier van zijn leraren, Thomas Couture en William Morris Hunt; en zijn experimenten in landschapsschilderkunst in de openlucht. De kunstenaar portretteert zichzelf als een landschapsarchitect die klaar is om aan een schildersexpeditie te beginnen.
