Johann Gottfried Auerbach came in 1716 to Vienna, where he has created in the wake many paintings for the imperial court and the aristocracy. 1741 finally was appointed imperial chamber painter. From his hand portraits exist of Emperor Charles VI. and his wife Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel as well as by Maria Theresa and her husband Francis Stephen of Lorraine. These are - as presented here image and the counterpart with Elisabeth Christine (Inv No. 11,235th.) - classified as typical examples of the courtly portrait style of the first half of the 18th century. The emperor is standing here to see the Spanish coat dress, there is of long tunic, knee-length pants, cape, a feather hat and a sword. It is those clothes, the men at official functions had to appear at court. At the same time it is also a sign of the high rank of the wearer. Usually, the individual garments were made of black silk; on special occasions wore Charles VI. However, one made of gold and silver brocade design.
