This painting, which Ignaz de Luca called "His Majesty. The emperor when he plowed, a symbol of fertility" leads, was shown in 1777 as part of the Academy exhibition in the small Redoute Hall of the Hofburg. The starting point for this allegorical representation is a real event: On August 19, 1769 had died in Slavíkovice near Brno / to an axle damage to the carriage of Joseph II.. The hindered in its onward journey Emperor then went to a nearby field where he took the servant January Kartos the plow from his hand to it to perform even across the field. Soon a regular cult continued to this place and the agricultural activity of the ruler one: The day kept the Moravian Museum in Brno plow was worshiped by the inhabitants as a relic, and since 1769 five monuments on the relevant plot were a total built. The Physiocrats native of China domestic pushed the imperial plowing from the beginning with great enthusiasm. Accordingly, the actions of the Emperor was interpreted as a commitment to physiocratism. . Joseph II, who was a patron of agriculture in many ways, not operated, moreover the only European ruler Plowing: Even Louis XV. paid homage in this way to agriculture. Maulbertsch this incident has not been implemented as a history painting, but created an illustration of plowing in the context of the government is to lead this ruler in mind the importance of this specific act. In the center of the composition is the staged as a Roman emperor wearing a laurel wreath and general's staff Joseph II. In addition to its head is on the Säulenpostament a sign to see with his motto Virtute et exemplo ( "By virtue and example"). This slogan has been illustrated by the agricultural operation of the ruler in Slavíkovice, a transfer from theory to practice has been achieved. To the left of the Emperor, the allegorical figure of abundance, from their dress grain swells, on his right hand a farmer with a plow, which is designated on the moldboard with the year 1769 and thus clearly establishes the connection to the above-mentioned episode. Is Before Joseph II. Supports a woman expectantly looks up to him and tried to catch her dress gathered as many of the falling grains. On her leg a child who in his right hand holding an empty bucket and the left arm in the direction of a sheet has, on the number 1772 to read rejects. Thus the memory is evoked in that year, a long famine was in the Moravian over. the representation by a female form with a helmet in the background that is to be identified as Minerva is completed. You, the goddess of wisdom and prudent warfare, but also of art and craft, observed thoughtfully what is happening in the foreground. [Georg Lechner, 9/2009]
