Form and technique of this painting suggest that this is likely is a design for a ceiling fresco although execution has not been demonstrated so far. The presentation is that point in Luke's Gospel (Lk 2.22 to 38), where reports of the Presentation in the Temple, and already see the high priest Simeon and the prophetess Hannah, the old in the eight days the child the Savior. In the center of the high priest is with the baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph kneeling in front of it. To the left of Simeon is the prophetess who has the verdant stick of Joseph, which is presented to her by an angel. The "offering" is stylistically the frescoes in Sümeg near and is therefore attributable Maulbertsch. So about the "Adoration of the Magi" to refer that is not only similar in construction to the figurative composition, but also in the lighting through the located also in the center of the light source "offering". The figure of the high priest, in turn, which is expected to decline to Giambattista Pittoni, can be found in similar form in several representations of this event. These are assigned painters from among the Vienna Academy from around 1748/1749 and leave on a lost image invention Maulbertsch close. [Georg Lechner, 10/2009]
