Lange tijd was de identiteit van deze bebaarde man onbekend. Uit recent onderzoek blijkt dat het zeer waarschijnlijk een portret is van Mathijs Jansz Boeckels, een horlogemaker uit Haarlem. Dit verklaart de nadruk van het gouden uurwerk rechtsonder; hoewel klein, straalt het object van belang. Boeckels kwam uit een lange lijn van vooraanstaande doopsgezinde horlogemakers. Zijn kleding is passend donker en eenvoudig en weerspiegelt de doopsgezinde terughoudendheid; bovendien mist hij de opzichtige witte manchetten die typisch door de welgestelde Nederlanders worden gedragen.
