Tijdens de eerste decennia van zijn carrière ondersteunde Pierre-Auguste Renoir zichzelf met portretopdrachten. Dit kleine meisje is de dochter van Paul Durand-Ruel, de grote impressionistische handelaar van wie Albert Barnes bijna de helft van zijn Renoirs kocht.
