Dit schilderij is ongebruikelijk in het oeuvre van Cézanne vanwege het specifieke literaire onderwerp. Het vertegenwoordigt het verhaal uit de Metamorfosen van Ovidius waarin Zeus zichzelf vermomt als een zwaan om Leda, de dochter van koning Thestius, te verleiden. Dit is zeker een van de meer openlijk sensuele schilderijen van de kunstenaar: Leda toont zichzelf voor de kijker, met dramatisch gebogen heupen en blozende wangen, terwijl de snavel van de zwaan zich om haar pols wikkelt alsof ze bezit van haar neemt. Cézanne maakte ter voorbereiding van het schilderij twee tekeningen, waarvan er één de figuur toont die een champagnefluit vasthoudt.
