In 1834 begon Delacroix met een serie litho's gewijd aan Hamlet, waarmee hij stemmige beelden creëerde die de onrustige psyche van de prins weerspiegelen. Door sleutelscènes en poëtische passages te kiezen, waren de zeer persoonlijke en dramatische beelden van de kunstenaar ongebruikelijk in Frankrijk, waar de belangstelling voor Shakespeare zich pas in de negentiende eeuw ontwikkelde. Hier is Ophelia, wier geest uit haar evenwicht is geraakt door de moord op haar vader Polonius en de afwijzing door Hamlet, in een stroom gevallen terwijl ze bloemen plukte, en haar met water doordrenkte jurk zal haar spoedig naar de 'modderige dood' slepen. Deze trieste gebeurtenis vindt plaats buiten het podium en wordt poëtisch beschreven in bedrijf 4, scène 7 door koningin Gertrude. Gihaut frères publiceerde de set van dertien prenten van de kunstenaar in 1843, met een tweede uitgebreide editie van zestien uitgegeven door Bertauts in 1864. Cooly ontving de prenten aanvankelijk, maar werd uiteindelijk erkend als een van de belangrijkste prestaties van de kunstenaar.
