De titel verwijst naar het evangelie volgens de heilige Matteüs (17:24-27) en verwijst naar de figuurcompositie op de aanlegsteiger rechts.
Jezus heeft de apostel Petrus naar het meer van Kafarnaüm gestuurd, waar hij op wonderbaarlijke wijze een muntstuk vindt in de bek van de eerste vis die bijt. Met de munt kunnen Jezus en zijn discipelen verplicht schattingsgeld betalen aan de tempel in Jeruzalem.
