Salvator Rosa ontwikkelde een soort dramatisch landschap waarin de natuur wordt gepresenteerd als wild, gevaarlijk en gevuld met opvallende effecten van licht, kapotte bomen, grillige kliffen en donkere grotten. Rosa, geboren in Napels, vestigde zich in 1649 in Rome en produceerde dramatische werken die worden beschouwd als tegenhangers van de rustige, klassieke landschappen van Claude Lorrain en Nicolas Poussin. Rosa's donkere stijl past goed bij het onderwerp van dit paar schilderijen; ze vertellen een episode uit de Grieks-Perzische oorlogen, zoals verteld door de oude groene historicus Herodotus. De heerser van het eiland Samos, Polycrates, was gezegend met opmerkelijk geluk. In een poging een ommekeer in het lot af te wenden, gooide hij een kostbare ring in zee, maar die werd aan hem teruggegeven, opgeslokt door een vis. Aan zijn geluk kwam echter een einde toen hij door Oroetus van Sardis in de val werd gelokt en ter dood werd gebracht.

Oil on canvas was used by the Italian artist as the medium of the masterpiece. The artpiece is part of the digital collection of Art Institute Chicago, which is one of the world’s great art museums, housing a collection that spans centuries and the globe.
