In this splendid triptych the talents of a landscape specialist have been combined with those of the figurative painter Joos van Cleve. The setting for the Crucifixion, witnessed by the Virgin, Saint John, and the donor with his patron Saint Paul, is a vast landscape whose style is indebted to Joachim Patinir (represented in the adjacent gallery). The panoramic vista unifies the interior. On the left wing are Saints John the Baptist and Catherine, on the right Anthony of Padua and Nicholas of Tolentino. The latter two suggest that the altarpiece was an Italian commission. The frame is original but regilt.

Daarnaast is de uitlijning landschappelijk formaat en heeft een zijverhouding van 3 : 2, wat dat impliceert de lengte is 50% langer dan de breedte. Joos van Cleve was a Netherlandish painter, whose style was primarily Northern Renaissance. The artist was born in 1485 in Kleef, Noord-Rijnland-Westfalen, Duitsland en overleed op 56-jarige leeftijd in het jaar 1541 in Antwerpen, provincie Antwerpen, Vlaanderen, België.
