Judith was considered one of the most heroic women of the Old Testament. According to the biblical story, when her city was besieged by the Assyrian army, the beautiful young widow gained access to the quarters of the general Holofernes. After winning his confidence and getting him drunk, she took his sword and cut off his head, thereby saving the Jewish people. Although Judith was often shown richly and exotically clothed, Jan Sanders van Hemessen chose to present her as a monumental nude, aggressively brandishing her sword even after severing Holofernes’s head.

In 1580 de mannelijke kunstenaar Jan Sanders van Hemessen schilderde de klassieke kunst piece of art. The painting was made with the size: 39 × 30 3/8 in (99,1 × 77,2 cm). Oil on panel was used by the artist as the technique for the artwork. Today, this work of art can be viewed in in the Art Institute Chicago's art collection in Chicago, Illinois, Verenigde Staten van Amerika. Dit meesterwerk, dat behoort tot de publiek domein wordt aangeboden met dank aan Kunstinstituut Chicago. The creditline of the artwork is the following: Wirt D. Walker Fund. In addition to that, the alignment is in portrait formaat with an image ratio of 3 : 4, which means that the length is 25% shorter than the width. Jan Sanders van Hemessen was a male painter of Dutch nationality, whose artistic style can be classified as Northern Renaissance. The Dutch artist lived for a total of 37 years and was born in the year 1519 in Hemiksem and passed away in 1556 in Haarlem.
